I just recently learned that some people garden on their roofs. I think it’s a great idea, especially for people who love to garden but do not have a yard large enough to plant one. I am just a bit confused as to how exactly intensive roofing systems work. Because they are planted in at least a foot of topsoil, the gardens must be heavy. Once vegetables, flowers, shrubs, or even trees are added, how does a house support this much weight? The garden must also be watered. Water adds additional weight. Maintenance is another thing that I am confused about. How do you plant the garden, water the plants, and harvest the vegetables? Do you walk through it as you do gardens that are planted on the ground? I thnk green roofs are a wonderful idea. I just don’t understand how they are supported or maintained.
