The main cause of truly bad breath (also called halitosis) is the bacteria living our mouths and feeding on food particles and even the plaque on our teeth. The little buggers hide out in really hard to clean places on the tongue and in and around your teeth. It wuldn’t be so bad carrying them around except that when they eat that leftover food or plaque, they excrete sulfur compounds which do not smell at all good. These compouinds are one of the main bad breath causes. Of course, there are other culprits that may be implicated in causing bad breath which also need to be considered and, if they are contributing then they also must be dealt with. Still, in most cases, bacterial action is the major villain.
